The Ultimate Time-Saver: Why a Facelift is Actually Low-Maintenance

While a facelift requires a brief period of downtime, its long-term benefits are unmatched. This post compares the one-time recovery of surgery to the ongoing time and cost of non-surgical treatments, revealing why a facelift is the ultimate time-saver.

Denver, by and large, is a low maintenance kind of place.  We wear jeans to watch the opera, sunscreen instead of foundation, and a hike is our idea of a date.

Now plastic surgery typically has a reputation for being the domain of the high maintenance person, but hear me out- a facelift is actually low maintenance in the long run.

While a facelift involves a period of surgical downtime, it’s a powerful one-time event that offers a long-lasting, comprehensive result. In contrast, many of the non-surgical treatments we use to “stave off” aging are a continuous cycle that demands a significant commitment of time, money, and effort over the years.

Ok, maybe you really don’t care, and are ready to “age gracefully.”  In this case, fine, a facelift is high maintenance. However, if the signs of aging in your face are something that really bothers you, keep reading.

The "Maintenance Treadmill" of Non-Surgical Treatments

If you’re regularly using Botox, dermal fillers, lasers, threads, or a combination of these, you’re on what we call the maintenance treadmill. These treatments are invaluable tools, but it’s important to understand their temporary nature:

  • Botox: It smooths dynamic wrinkles but needs to be repeated every 3-4 months.
  • Dermal Fillers: They restore lost volume and fill static wrinkles, but the results typically last from six months to two years, requiring repeat injections.
  • Lasers and Energy Devices: They improve skin tone, texture, and tighten skin, but a series of treatments is often needed, with regular touch-ups required to maintain results.
  • Threads: These can provide a temporary lift, but the results are not as long-lasting as surgery and require ongoing re-tightening.

While each of these treatments has its place, the cumulative time, cost, and effort of managing these appointments can become a significant part of your routine—and to be honest, many treatments do not give a “wow” result.

The Facelift: A Long-Term Solution

A facelift is a surgical solution that addresses the fundamental issues of aging. It goes beyond the surface to lift and reposition the underlying facial muscles and tissues, while also removing excess, sagging skin. It is the only treatment that can effectively correct:

  • Sagging neck skin and vertical neck bands
  • Jowls and a poorly defined jawline
  • Deep lines between the nose and mouth (nasolabial folds)

Instead of a temporary fix, a facelift provides a durable “reset” button for your face. While results are not completely immune to future aging, they typically last 10 years or more. For many patients, a single facelift in their 50s is enough to carry them confidently well into their older years. When combined with brow and eyelid surgery, and routine good skin care, this can often get rid of the need to do any other maintenance treatments.

Comparing Downtime: Surgical vs. Repetitive

When considering a facelift, the downtime is a common concern. However, it’s a one-time period of recovery versus the continuous downtime and expense of non-surgical maintenance.

  • Facelift Recovery Timeline:
    • Same-day surgery: A facelift is an outpatient procedure, meaning you go home the same day.
    • First Week: Your surgeon will see you for a follow-up a couple of days after surgery, and again at one week to remove stitches. You’ll have some bruising and swelling and will want to avoid social appearances, but most patients feel well enough to manage pain with Tylenol and ibuprofen.
    • Two Weeks: Most visible bruising and swelling have resolved enough for most people to return to their normal routine, including work. You may still have some minor swelling and can use makeup to cover any residual bruising.
    • Four Weeks: You are typically cleared to resume strenuous activities and heavy exercise.
  • The Big Picture: The in-person downtime is about 2 weeks for most people, depending on their personal routine. This is a small, one-time investment in a decade or more of confidence.

A Powerful Combination: Facelift and Minimal Upkeep

A facelift doesn’t mean you have to abandon all other aesthetic treatments. In fact, a facelift can be the perfect foundation. By correcting the deep issues of sagging skin and tissue, it makes any future skincare and non-surgical treatments far more effective. When combined with a brow lift, eyelid surgery, and a good routine of skincare, a facelift can significantly reduce or even eliminate the need for ongoing maintenance.

If you are ready to get off the treadmill of temporary treatments and invest in a long-lasting, comprehensive solution, a facelift may be the low-maintenance secret you’ve been looking for.
